Dehara Thompson — Candidate for Port Coquitlam City Council 2026

A builder's mindset.
A community heart.

I'm a Port Coquitlam parent who has spent over a decade in the rooms where decisions get made — and I know what it takes to turn a decision into real, lasting change for families.

From running a sport nonprofit as Executive Director of She Plays Sports Society, to managing operations at Surrey United Soccer Club, to serving on the board of Mabuhay House Society, to chairing logistics and volunteer management for the BC Summer Games 2024 — I've built things that work. And I've done it in this region, for families like yours.

"Council is just a bigger PAC table. And I've never left a table without getting something done for the community."

I believe Port Coquitlam deserves a council that reflects how much it has grown — in diversity, in ambition, and in expectation. I'm running to be that voice.

Three priorities.
Real results.

Every policy position I hold maps back to one of three core commitments to the people of Port Coquitlam.

01
🏠

Homes for Real Families

With a 0.2% vacancy rate, PoCo families are being squeezed out of the city they helped build. I will fight for housing solutions that are practical, fast, and built for the people who actually live here.

  • Purpose-built rental housing with family-sized units
  • Streamlined approval timelines to reduce builder barriers
  • Smart density in the right places, protecting neighbourhood character
  • Affordable housing pathways for newcomer and lower-income families

💰

Spend Smart, Deliver More

PoCo residents are proud of this city's fiscal discipline. As a nonprofit executive who has managed budgets and secured grants for years, I understand what it means to do more with less.

  • Continue PoCo's record of below-average tax increases
  • Seek provincial and federal grants to offset infrastructure costs
  • Transparent, accountable reporting on capital projects
  • Partnerships with community organizations to extend city services
03

Recreation for Every Family

PoCo is building its most ambitious recreation infrastructure in decades. I am the only candidate with hands-on sport administration, policy, and community recreation experience.

  • Gates Park soccer hub that serves every community, not just some
  • Affordable access programs built into new facility design from day one
  • Advocate for SkyTrain extension to connect residents to the region
  • Inclusive sport programming backed by BCRPA IDEA principles

Three ways to
make it happen

This campaign wins on the ground. Here's how you can be part of it.

🚪
Volunteer
Join the door-knocking crew, help at community events, or contribute your professional skills. Every hour makes a difference in a low-turnout municipal race.
🪧
Lawn Sign
A lawn sign in your neighbourhood is worth dozens of digital impressions. Oxford Heights, Citadel, and Mary Hill are priorities — but every sign counts.
Coffee Chat
Host 10–12 neighbours at your home for an informal conversation with Dehara. Small gatherings in real living rooms are the most powerful tool in a local campaign.
